Eating and drinking at the Arsenal

“Nothing can cure the soul but the senses, just as nothing can cure the senses but the soul,” wrote Oscar Wilde in 1890.

In 2013, the Arsenal celebrates 100 years in Islington. At the time of going to press, the club is making a fortune but the skinflint regime in charge isn’t prepared to invest in the top talent.

It’s a terrible long-term ‘strategy’ which also shows a complete lack of ambition and disregard for the fans. Boo hoo.

So what you gooner do? Well, fortunately the club’s North London environment is bursting with good things to eat and drink. Take Oscar’s sage advice and cure the lack of soul on the pitch this season by eating and drinking yourself senseless. That is certainly my plan…

Best pubs for…

  • Sleb spotting – The Duchess of Kent, 441 Liverpool Road, N7 8PR
  • Hot bar staff – El Commandante, 10 Annette Road, N7 6ET
  • Atmosphere – The Gunners, 204 Blackstock Road, N5 1EN
  • Friendly vibe – The Bank of Friendship, 224 Blackstock Road, N4 3NG
  • Real ales – The Tap Room, 163 Upper Street, N1 1RE
  • Getting served quickly – Arsenal Tavern, 174 Blackstock Road, N4 2JS
  • Vintage burgundy on tap (come on, this is the Arsenal) – The Sampler, 266 Upper St, N1 2UQ

Places to eat:

  • Edible burgers and hot dogs – the van in front of the Arsenal Supporters Club on Gillespie Road, between Avenell and St Thomas’s Rd, has never given me food poisoning. Keep up the good work. Hot dog £3
  • Vietnamese – Au Lac, 82 Highbury Park, N5 2XE. Rehydrate with a large bowl of beef noodle soup (pho bo) £7
  • Fish and chips – Seafish, 205 Upper St, N1 1RQ. Great quality cod and chips £6.25
  • Pizza – Bacio, 178-184 Blackstock Road, N5 1HA. Margherita pizza £7.50
  • Pies -Piebury Corner, corner of Gillespie and Avenell Road. ‘Tony Adams’ steak and ale pie £4.50
  • Sushi -Dotori, 3A Stroud green Road, N4 2DQ. For the more diet-conscious, four courses £25
  • Steak – Garufa, 104, Highbury Park, N5 2XE. Go large on a 400g rib-eye £28.50
  • Best value – Lahmacun at Crystal, 528 Holloway Road, N7 6JO. Not just a bargain at the football, surely one of London’s ultimate food bargains. Flatbread with spicy lamb, cooked in a wood oven, served rolled with salad. £1.50
